Orica Sodium Cyanide Project

Project: Orica Sodium Cyanide Plant Expansion

Yarwun, Queensland, Australia

To take advantage of robust market conditions Orica undertook an expansion of the Yarwun Sodium Cyanide (NaCN) plant from 60 to in excess of 80ktpa. Sodium Cyanide is used primarily for the extraction of gold and is formed through reaction of ammonia, natural gas and caustic soda.

Shedden Uhde completed the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for the expansion before being engaged to complete Detailed Engineering Design, Procurement and Construction Management.

The expansion involved work on the front end, which involves the production of sodium cyanide “wet cake”, and the drying and solids handling backend. The project was designed to accommodate future expansion to 100ktpa and waste heat recovery.
